Reminder! Get married in whatever way you two please. Seriously. Take inspiration from Karen and Tyler – they absolutely nailed it.

One of the most memorable unions I had the pleasure of witnessing this year was Karen and Tyler's City Hall elopement back in May. And let me tell you, it was memorable for so many reasons, not least of which was the wind. It was one of those blustery, almost-out-of-control windy days that Chicago occasionally throws our way, which, as a photographer, presented both challenges and incredibly fun opportunities to get creative. This elopement was a dream come true for me, a chance to really flex my creative muscles and capture something truly special.

Karen and Tyler's ceremony was beautifully simple. Just the two of them, exchanging vows in the heart of City Hall. It was intimate, it was heartfelt, and it was absolutely perfect. No fuss, no frills, just pure, unadulterated love. After the ceremony, we embarked on a whirlwind tour of the city, braving the windswept streets to capture some stunning photos. The wind, which initially seemed like a potential obstacle, actually became our greatest ally, adding a touch of drama and whimsy to the images. Karen's veil danced in the breeze, their hair was playfully tousled, and the movement added an incredible energy to the photos. It was all so spontaneous and carefree. Short, sweet, intimate – everything they wanted and needed. And the best part? Just hours later, they were off to the airport, embarking on their honeymoon adventure. Talk about a perfect wedding day! If you ask me, that's the definition of a celebration done right.

Spending those few hours with Karen and Tyler was such a joy. They were so relaxed and genuinely happy, and their excitement was contagious. As we wandered through the city, they shared their story with me, explaining how their wedding plans had evolved over the years. Their engagement coincided with the tail end of the pandemic, which, as many couples can attest to, threw a wrench into their initial plans. They started out envisioning a large, traditional wedding, but as time went on, their vision shifted. They downsized, then downsized again, until they finally realized that the most authentic celebration for them was a simple, intimate elopement. I absolutely loved their spontaneity and their willingness to embrace change. They weren't even entirely sure if they'd be able to secure their marriage license and squeeze in the ceremony that day, but they were determined to make it happen, all while knowing their honeymoon flight was just a few hours away. That kind of "seize the day" attitude is truly inspiring.

I'm a firm believer that there's no right or wrong way to get married. The most important thing is that the celebration reflects the couple's unique love story and their personal values. Karen and Tyler's elopement was a beautiful example of that. It was a reminder that weddings don't have to be big or elaborate to be meaningful. Sometimes, the simplest celebrations are the most profound. And I'm hoping that their story inspires more couples to embrace nontraditional, sweet, and intentional love stories in 2025 and beyond. Let's see more elopements, more intimate ceremonies, more celebrations that truly reflect the couple's vision. Cheers to Karen and Tyler, and cheers to all the couples who dare to do things their own way!
